What is Project 18?

Project 18 is a project designed to learn more about young guys who hook up with other guys. The goal is to follow a group of young men over three years to learn about their lives and what they do to stay healthy.

What do Project 18 participants do?

Participants take surveys about their lives, including questions about experiences, relationships, drug use and sexual behavior. They will also receive free HIV testing. They are paid $410 over the course of the study. The study is completely confidential and participants may leave at any time.

What do participants gain from Project 18?

Participants are helping to change the way that services are designed and delivered to young men like themselves. The information that we gain from Project 18 will help create programs that are effective and appropriate for guys who hook up with guys.

Participants will be given $410 over the course of the study. They will also receive free periodic HIV testing and referrals, resources, and services for health and well-being in the New York City area.

Who runs Project 18?

Project 18 is a research study run out of New York University. Project 18 is located at the Center for Health, Identity, Behavior, and Prevention Studies, also known as CHIBPS (pronounced “chips” like “potato chips”). The head researcher, or principal investigator, of Project 18 is Dr. Perry N. Halkitis. He works with a team of staff and students interested in learning more about how to keep young men healthy.
